Finally I have had some time to get something done. Here are few photos of a flak nest I made, a short tutorial follows.
Here is the tutorial.
I use a hexagonal MDF base as I want it to fit in my forest.
Dill holes for the upright support poles.
Lay the floor planks (coffee sticks).
Glue in the upright support poles (BBQ skewers).
Glue the horizontal logs to desired height.
Cut upright support poles to desired height.
Add gravel for ground surface.
Prime black.
Paint all the logs.
Paint all ground surfaces.
The following photos are for size comparison. A few Airfix Germans added.
The flak will follow as soon as it is complete. Dry brushing and flocking will be done later.
Hope you like and that it was useful.
Nice work. I think I will try it myself because I need something like this. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYeah, cool tip. Will have a bash at this myself
ReplyDeleteThis is terrific Greg!!

Very nice tutorial
ReplyDeleteNice work and great idea. Well done.
ReplyDeleteSimple but great.
ReplyDeleteWell explained tutorial - thx for sharing, GReg!
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea! I think the log idea has the potential for some other uses - trenches, mortar & gun emplacements if there is way to add sloping ground in front of one side. Might have a go!
ReplyDeleteHi Andrew thank you for the comment. I'm planning on doing a few Russian house in the future using this method.

ReplyDeleteNo problem at all and thanks for the reply on the barbed wire as well. They both look great.
ReplyDeleteI actually came back to modelling thanks to my young son wanting a model tank (not that I was any good in my youth) and have been amazed at what people can do. Things have changed a lot as you say and there was no such thing as the internet then to share ideas and pictures on!
I'm slowly getting there but I'm always looking for better ways to do things and new things to try, so site like yours are invaluable
I had a few of questions though, if you dont mind:
- Before gluing the coffee stick 'planks' down did you need to roughen the surface up with some sandpaper, to give the glue something to 'key' onto?
- What glue did you use? PVA, superglue, wood?
- What colour did you paint/wash the 'logs' with once they had been primed?
Thanks again for sharing.
Andrew
Andrew I'm glad you find my Blog helpful. I don't roughen up the surface but there should be no harm in doing so if you feel the need. I use PVA to glue them down and then put a heavy object on to prevent the edges from warping. I prime everything black and then dip my brush into thinners and a touch of Humbrol Wood which is then painted over the wood parts. It bleeds into the wood giving the brown a blackish color. When dry I go back with just the Humbrol Wood without the thinners to dilute and paint and apply it just in the center of the planks leaving the edges the original color. Hope it makes sense. Have a look at Yards.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I've recently finished all my WIPs and I was wondering what do next - I think I may have just found it!
I'll let you know how I get on.
Andrew
You are welcome Andrew. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
DeleteHi Greg
ReplyDeleteI've managed to start work on some generic field works inspired by the flak nest and have started a WIP post on the Britmodeller forum that I've recently joined.
Are you happy for me share the link here, so you can have a look?
Regards
Andrew
Andrew that would be great please share the link. Look forward to seeing what you have come up with.

ReplyDeleteSorry another question.
When you prime in black what do you use?
Is it acrylic/enamel paint or a spray paint e.g. car primer (which a lot of people use here in the UK for vehicles etc.)?
Thanks.
Andrew
Andrew I use a spray but in matt avoid gloss. The reason for black is to simulate shadows in the places I can't reach. So don't go with grey.
ReplyDeleteThanks Greg. A black matt spray was what I was thinking of using but wanted to check.
ReplyDeleteYour work is looking good just waiting to be approved before I can reply on the forum.
DeleteHi Greg
ReplyDeleteThere's been a bit more progress on my field works if you're interested
Thanks.
Andrew

Have a good Christmas and New Year.

Always a pleasure Andrew. I enjoy seeing other war gamers work and draw inspiration from it. May you have a blessed Christmas and a great New Year too!

ReplyDeleteThanks for popping over again to have a look and I'm glad you liked them.
I'm having a go out my first hhouse next - a direct copy of the Armourfast Normandy House, as I got one for my birthday and I've bought some board so I can make some copies.
You mentioned your working on some river sections, which I'm also thinking of doing, can we expect some pics anytime soon?
Thank you as always.
Andrew
Yes Andrew I have started the river banks on the MDF pieces that interlink in the same way as the roads. Basically bigger versions of the road with the surface being a different color and added varnish to give it its shine. Will put up a few pics as I progress. Looking forward to the Normandy house.
